There’s something truly magical about the Franconia Ridge Trail — the sweeping alpine views, the sense of being above it all, the stillness that settles over the mountains in the early morning hours. But this hike in June? It's truly magical. Because tucked into the middle of this epic adventure was a moment that changed everything: a mountain-top proposal, complete with a family heirloom ring, a sweet pup named Bella, and two people in love on top of the world.

A June Afternoon Start for a Big Surprise

We started the day in the afternoon, planning to be on the summit for this special moment in the evening sunlight with enough time to hike down before dark. Early June afternoons in the White Mountains are crisp and can be quiet — the kind that makes you feel like the forest is holding its breath with you. It's a great time of year because it's before the hustle and bustle of summer break. Kevin had reached out ahead of time with a plan to propose somewhere along the Franconia Ridge, and I was already excited (this trail is one of my favorites for a reason). But when he mentioned he’d be bringing Bella, their sweet adventure pup, along too? Game over. I was in.

This particular hike already held a little meaning to them. It was one of the first hikes they did together, back in February a few years ago. This was Mercedes first big hike and she was absolutely blown away by the views. When Kevin told me all of this, I knew it would be the perfect spot for such an epic moment.

A Proposal with a View

Once I reached the ridgeline (well ahead of Kevin and Mercedes), the light was perfection. The clouds were just clearing, revealing rolling peaks in every direction. It was a beautiful but very windy day, which is normal for a ridgeline hike like this one. I bundled up, ate some snacks, and staked out a spot along Mount Lafayette summit as just another hiker as I waited for them to make their way up behind me.

They paused for a moment to soak it all in — and that’s when it happened. He got down on one knee, pulled out a stunning family heirloom ring, and asked her to marry him right there, with Bella watching and the mountains as their only witnesses. Truly amazing to have this summit to ourselves.

It was such a beautifully personal moment — quiet, intentional, and full of love. No crowd. No pressure. Just the two of them, their pup, and a view they’ll never forget.

A White Mountains Engagement to Remember

After the big “YES!” we explored the ridge a bit more, capturing candid photos of them snuggling up, laughing, and taking in the view together as newly engaged partners in life. Bella, of course, got plenty of love and camera time too — I firmly believe dogs should always be part of the big moments!

June is one of the best times of year for a Franconia Ridge proposal — the trails are snow-free, the temps are perfect, and the early summer light makes every photo feel like a dream. Just be ready for a real hike (this one is no joke!) and pack plenty of water, snacks, and layers.

Thinking About Proposing on Franconia Ridge?

Here’s what makes it such an incredible location for an adventurous proposal:

  • Jaw-dropping views — some of the best in all of New Hampshire

  • Dog-friendly — bring your pup along for the ride!

  • Plenty of privacy — with the right timing (like a sunrise start), you’ll feel like you have the whole mountain ridgeline to yourself

  • A rewarding hike — for couples who love adventure and want to earn that view together

Just remember — this is a serious hike with steep terrain and exposed ridgelines. It’s worth it a thousand times over, but make sure you’re prepared and up for the challenge (or bring someone who knows the trail inside and out 😉).

Final Thoughts

This Franconia Ridge proposal was everything I love about documenting adventure love stories — a meaningful location, a sweet couple, a surprise moment that unfolded naturally, and a whole lot of heart. From the heirloom ring to the happy tail wags, it was the kind of day that makes you believe in magic.

If you’re dreaming up your own mountaintop proposal or engagement session in the White Mountains, let’s make it happen. Whether it’s sunrise on a ridgeline or a cozy lakeside picnic, I’m here to help you plan a day that feels like you.
