Why Franconia Notch is Perfect for a Fall Elopement
Franconia Notch State Park is a gem in the White Mountains. Come autumn, the entire area transforms into a foliage wonderland, making it a top-tier elopement spot. Whether you want dramatic mountain backdrops, serene lakeside views, or cozy forest vibes, Franconia Notch has it all.
Here's why you'll love everything the Franconia notch has to offer for your wedding day:
Variety of Locations: Some of my absolute favorites are Artists Bluff, Echo Lake, and the Basin. They all offer their own unique charm. Whats great about this area is there's both easily accessible spots, as well as breathtaking hikes.
Epic Foliage: I may be a little bias but there is nothing quite like experiencing the foliage in the White Mountains. – Especially in Franconia Notch. And to add in the memories of your wedding day with the stunning views, it will truly be extraordinary.
Adventure Factor: For those who love the outdoors, Franconia Notch offers hiking trails, tramway rides, biking, and kayaking to level up your day.

Tips for Planning your Franconia Notch Fall Elopement
Timing is Everything
Peak foliage in the White Mountains typically hits around late September to mid-October. For the best views (and fewer crowds), plan your elopement for a weekday and early in the morning. Bonus: Sunrise ceremonies give you dreamy lighting and the quiet serenity of the mountains waking up.
Scout the Perfect Location
If you're looking to maximize your foliage experience and for a little (or big) adventure, a hike in this area is the perfect way to do this. Artists Bluff (alltrails link here) is a stunning hike, but it's iconic views have brought more and more people over the years and is now highly crowded at peak foliage. I would recommend to plan for a location like this just before peak foliage at the end of September and only at sunrise on a weekday. This ensures you will have a little more privacy as a popular location.
If you're looking for a bit more of an adventure, the Notch is also home to the iconic Franconia Ridge Trail (alltrails link here). I would be lying if I said this wasn't my favorite hike in the White Mountains. The vast 360 views across the stunning ridge is nothing short of breathtaking. With these stunning views does come a decent hike. This trail does summit two, 4000 footer mountains. With preparation, hiking experience, and a proper timeline, this is sure to make an epic location for an elopement day in the fall.
Dress for the Weather
Fall in the mountains can be unpredictable. Layers are your best friend! Think long-sleeve wedding dresses, wool suits, warm shawls, and cozy boots for trekking between spots. Pro tip: Nude leggings under your dress are a lifesaver on chilly days.
If you can, Plan your adventure around the light.
Golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) is ideal for photography. Work with your photographer to map out a timeline that maximizes the best light for each location.
Fun Ideas to Elevate Your Elopement in Franconia Notch
Adventure Together:
Incorporate your favorite outdoor activities! Go for a post-ceremony hike, kayak across Echo Lake, or even share a picnic on a mountain top.

Celebrate at a cozy airbnb or Inn with a bonfire and star gazing to close out your adventure filled day. Bonus points for s'mores!
Include your Dog:
Franconia Notch is mostly (when the beach is open to the public there is no dogs allowed, but off season or times you can bring your dog) dog-friendly, so bring your four-legged best friend along for the fun. Imagine the photos of them trotting through the leaves beside you!

Kaitlyn & John's Franconia Notch Fall Elopement:
We started their day under a canopy of stars, meeting at the trailhead in the quiet dark of early morning to catch sunrise for their vows. They brought along their adorable dogs and two close friends, who were not only incredible company but also took on the role of dog wranglers, gear carriers, and officiant.
Arriving at the summit early gave us time to soak in the magic of the moment—stargazing under a blanket of deep blue sky, sipping hot coffee, and enjoying a mini picnic as we waited for the first light to touch the peaks.
The couple got ready separately at the summit, and their first look as the sun peeked over the mountaintops was nothing short of breathtaking. The golden hour light wrapped around them like a warm embrace, making the moment feel even more magical. Their ceremony, officiated by one of their sweet friends, was heartfelt and intimate, while the other friend stood by with the pups, who might have stolen the show with their excitement.
After their vows, they explored the summit together, soaking in the views and reveling in the sheer beauty of the day. We captured stunning photos with the foliage at its absolute peak—vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows framing their love story. Planning for a sunrise ceremony not only kept the crowds away but also gave them the jaw-dropping, peaceful views they had envisioned.
We wrapped up the summit experience with a celebratory toast before making our way back down the trail, hearts full and smiles wide. It was the perfect day in every way, and one they’ll remember for a lifetime.
