How to Elope in the White Mountains: The basics!

Technically, all you need to get married in NH and most of the White Mountains is a legal marriage license. Yup, that's pretty much it! The rest is an added bonus to make your day more special. Here is more info on how to obtain your NH marriage license. One other thing you might need depending on where you're planning for is a permit. Thankfully most of the White Mountains do no require a permit but some locations do. Read more here. A perk of working with me is I'm ordained in NH and can sign off on your marriage license. So if you're planning to just do a vow exchange or want a family member to officiate your ceremony, you won't need to hire an officiant if you don't want to.

Why the White Mountains Are Perfect for Your Elopement

The White Mountains offer a blend of rugged beauty and serene solitude. One of my favorite things about these mountains is that they have the beauty of a national park without the crowds. You can find seclusion here if you're up for a bit of an adventure off the beaten path. From dramatic alpine summits to lush hidden waterfalls, this region provides endless options for crafting a day that feels uniquely you. Plus with very minimal permit requirements and a variety of trails for all skill levels, it's incredibly accessible for couples looking for a stress free adventure. 2. The Kancamagus Highway – This byway is packed with gorgeous overlooks and trailheads. I love this area if you're looking for an easily accessible but stunning location. Sometimes it's even fun to plan to stop at multiple locations to do some exploring and get a variety of beautiful landscapes.

  3. Crawford Notch – Home to another classic NH hike, Mount Willard. This area is also a stunning scenic drive along 302 where you can see views of waterfalls, cliffs, and plenty of hiking options.

How To Plan your White Mountains Elopement

When to Start Planning

The thing is, there is no specific timeframe you have to start planning your elopement. That's one of the things that makes eloping great! I've helped plan both elopements for well over a year, and also pulled them together within 3 weeks. Depending on what your vision for your day is, it can be as simple or adventurous as you'd like.

My personal opinion? To give yourself plenty of time, not feel stressed and overwhelmed and still have the day of your dreams, I recommend planning 6-12 months out. This way you still have first dibs on the vendors you really want to work with and have plenty of time to plan all the details.

Where to Start when Planning your White Mountains Elopement

One of the best ways to get started and inspired to start planning your day is booking a consult call with a potential photographer (I'm a White Mountains Elopement expert and would love to chat–reach out here!) This is such a great way to chat with an expert of an area, get some questions answered, and get a feel for different ideas for your day. I offer free consult calls to connect, answer questions, and give inspiration to couples. Even if you're not quite ready to book any vendors just yet, it gives you a great idea of the reality of planning for a certain location and let's you connect with potential vendors.

One of the most common questions I get asked while on consult calls is about timelines. I try to stress that it does not need to be figured out this early on, but also understand it's hard to get a visual for your day without knowing how your day could look. Creating your timeline and coming up with backup locations and plan b+c is all part of what I offer and a benefit of working with me. I go into our second call together with a couple of rough timelines to give you an idea of how your day can look. Below I've included two timelines, one for a short hiking elopement day, and one for a longer day that includes loved ones.

Seasons Matter: What is the best season to plan your White Mountains Elopement?

The White Mountains offer so many different views along with fun activities in each season of the year. There is really no wrong answer when it comes to what season to plan for. It all comes down to what speaks to you most.

  • Spring: Snow can linger into May in higher elevations, but the waterfalls at this time are spectacular from all the melting snow. Trails can also be more muddy as the snow is melting which can cause some challenges. The greens during this time are also much brighter.

  • Summer: The warmer weather and lush greens makes this a popular option. It's best to plan for early morning this time of year to beat the crowds and the heat. In the middle of the day during the summer can be very hot, so if you're someone who does not love the heat or humidity keep this in mind while planning.

  • Fall: My ultimate favorite time of year here in the mountains. Peak foliage is magical, especially if you've never experienced it before. If you're hoping for good foliage in the mountains, plan for the end of September to mid October. The mornings and evenings can certainly get cold quickly at higher elevations so it's important to plan for this to stay comfortable. A fall elopement in the White Mountains is sure to give you sweeping views of stunning foliage. For more ideas and inspiration check out this – Franconia Notch Fall Elopement.

  • Winter: There is nothing quite like a snowy winter wonderland elopement. Along with the stunning snowy views comes colder more icy weather, so being prepared for this is key. If you're someone who does not do well in the cold, then this might not be the time to plan for as the weather can be a unpredictable at times.

However with the proper layers and preparation, think xc skiing, or snowshoe to a secluded field, or sleigh ride with hot cocoa. A White Mountains winter elopement will give you a magical feel. For more ideas and inspiration check out this – Winter Elopement Guide.

FAQ's about planning a White Mountains Elopement

  • Do you need a permit to get married in the White Mountains? – Not in most locations; however, there are some locations that do require one. (For example Cathedral Ledge in North Conway is a popular location that does require a permit to get married. Check out my blog – Everything you need to know to plan your Cathedral Ledge Wedding for more info on this location.) It is important to do your research on the location you're planning to celebrate your day so you know the ins and outs of what is needed, trail conditions, or road closures. This is also a perk of booking with a local expert. – Like me!

  • What is the best time of year to get married in the White Mountains? – This all depends on you. As mentioned above; all the seasons have their perks. Personally, I think September is the best time. Everyone is generally done traveling and back from summer break, and it's before peak foliage so there are less crowds. Another perk is the weather this time of year is usually perfect, not too warm or too cool.

  • Can I bring my dog with me to my White Mountain Elopement? – Yes! One of my favorite things about the White Mountains is that almost all locations are dog friendly. There are some that are not dog friendly; they tend to mostly be beach areas but again it's best to do your research or book with a local expert.

How to plan your White Mountains Elopement: Why choose me to help plan your day?

I'm not just your photographer –I'm your guide, location expert, planner, and biggest hype girl, and most importantly friend. Having hiked many of these mountains countless times (with my pups by my side), I know all the best spots, including more secluded ones for those looking for more privacy. Whether you're tackling a 4000-footer or opting for a more leisurely trail, I'll help you along the way from day dreaming your day, to finding the perfect location, timeline creation, and everything in between.

Planning your White Mountains elopement with a local expert in the area is a good way to ensure that your day runs smoothly. Although it does not happen often, there have been times where we have to pivot our plan completely last minute. For example, I recently had a couple that called me in a panic because they accidentally plugged in the directions I gave them incorrectly and ended up driving in the wrong direction, giving them a ETA of an hour late. Instead of meeting at the original location, I quickly sent them new directions to a location that had a similar feel that was an hour closer to them. So instead of missing out on our time together, we were able to pivot our plans and still make it all work because I am so familiar with the area.

My couples have done everything from dancing at the summit to having a romantic picnic and private vows. One couple even made coffee and PB+Js on top of Mt Moosilauke (Check it out here–Mt Moosilauke Elopement) a stunning 4000 footer–a simple yet unforgettable moment. Whatever your vision, I'll help bring it to life.

Final Thoughts

Eloping in the White Mountains is about more than just photos (though we'll definitely capture some epic ones!). It's about creating memories you'll treasure forever. If it's the fiery fall colors, or the quiet beauty of snow covered peaks, whatever it is that draws you to these mountains, this national forest has endless possibilities for your dream day.
