A Sunrise Elopement in Waterville Valley — The Perfect Fall Sunrise Elopement

When Lea and Alex told me they wanted a fall sunrise hike for their elopement — with their parents by their sides — I knew this day was going to be something really special. And I was right.

We met at the trailhead in the dark. Headlamps on, layers bundled up, the kind of crisp fall air that makes everything feel a little more alive. Alex's dad was there. Lea's mom was there. And everyone — every single person — was just so genuinely excited for what was about to unfold. That energy you feel at the start of a big day? It was there from the very first step on the trail.

This is what a White Mountains fall elopement can look like. Not a ballroom or a big venue, just a mountain, the people who matter most, and a whole lot of love and adventure. A White Mountains sunrise elopement in Waterville Valley is truly an epic way to start off your marriage.

Hiking Up in the Dark to An Unforgettable White Mountains Sunrise elopement in waterville valley

There is something truly magical about hiking to your wedding ceremony in the dark especially when you have not seen the view in person yet. The trail was quiet, the stars were still out, and the whole world felt like it belonged just to the five of us. No crowds, no noise — just the sound of footsteps on the trail and the occasional laugh echoing through the trees.

If you've ever considered a sunrise elopement hike in the White Mountains, this is exactly the kind of moment I want you to picture. The dark hike up isn't an inconvenience — it's part of the story. It's the build-up. It's the anticipation. And trust me, what's waiting at the top makes every step worth it. Plus it's almost like you have a whole different hike down when it's light out and you get to appreciate and experience the beauty of the trail you didn't yet see while hiking in the dark.

Getting Ready on the Summit — While the Sky Turned Cotton Candy

Once we reached the summit, we split up. Lea got tucked away in one spot with her mom helping her get ready. Alex got set up in another with his dad by his side. And while the two of them prepared to see each other for the first time on their wedding morning, the sky started doing something completely unforgettable.

Cotton candy. That's the only way to describe it. Soft pinks and lavenders and peaches spreading across the horizon like the mountain knew exactly what kind of morning this needed to be.

I'll be honest — these getting-ready moments on a summit felt differently than anything I photograph in a hotel room or cottage. There's no mirror to check, no ring light set up. It's just a mom zipping up her daughter's dress on top of a mountain while the sky puts on a show behind them. I'll never forget these moments.

The First Look — No Tap on the Shoulder, Just Them in The Moment

Lea and Alex knew exactly what they wanted for their first look — and what they didn't want. No staged tap on the shoulder. No cheesy countdown. But they still wanted that anticipation, that moment of almost seeing each other before they actually did.

So we kept it simple. When the time was right, they each walked out from their own space — no cue, just a raw moment with true raw emotion with their parents by their side to witness.

These ended up being some of my absolute favorite first look moments I've ever photographed. Because it was completely, entirely theirs. No performance, no posing. Just two people walking toward each other on a mountain summit at sunrise and seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day. The way Alex looked at her. The way Lea laughed. The way they just soaked in that real moment as if the rest of the world slowed down.

That's the kind of thing you can't direct. You can only be lucky enough to witness it.

The Sunrise Ceremony in Waterville Valley

After their first look, they sat together for a quiet moment and just took in those cotton candy skies before the sun made its actual appearance. And when it did — when that first real light crested the horizon — we found the most perfect spot on the summit for their ceremony.

The sunrise came up right behind them. Their parents stood close by. And in the most beautiful, simple, completely them way — Lea and Alex got married.

When they finished their vows, their parents cheered. Out loud, on a mountaintop, in the middle of the White Mountains. It was the sweetest thing. The kind of moment where you're reminded that elopements don't mean eloping from love — they just mean choosing the most intentional, most personal version of your wedding day possible. And inviting the people who show up for you, always.

Champagne, Cider Mimosas & Cider Donuts on a Summit

After the ceremony, they celebrated the way every couple should celebrate after getting married on a mountain at sunrise in the fall — with champagne, cider mimosas, and cider donuts.

I mean, honestly? Is there a more perfect fall New Hampshire moment than that? I think not.

They took in the view, soaked up the morning light, and just existed in that newly married glow for a while. No rush, no timeline pressure. Just two people — and the family who loves them most — sitting on top of a mountain together, celebrating the start of forever.

When they were ready, they changed, and we all hiked back down together. Simple. Beautiful. Fun. And so completely their own.

I love helping couples figure out what that looks like for them. If you're in the early stages of planning and trying to work out how to make everyone feel included while still having the day you actually want, I'd love to chat. That's exactly the kind of conversation I'm here for.
