Why Choose a Hiking Elopement?

Hiking elopements are perfect for couples who want an intimate and meaningful celebration away from the hustle of a traditional wedding. Here’s why they’re amazing:

Incredible Locations: Say your vows with nature’s most stunning backdrops.

Adventure Together: Start your marriage with an experience that’s uniquely yours. There is something so metaphorical about hiking a mountain on your wedding day to confess your love to each other.

Intentional & Personal: Create a day that reflects your story without the stress of a big event.

How to Plan a Hiking Elopement

1. Choose the Perfect Location

The location sets the tone for your hiking elopement. Here are two incredible places to consider:

White Mountains, New Hampshire

From the rugged Franconia Ridge Trail to the serene overlooks along the Kancamagus Highway, the White Mountains offer endless hiking options. Whether you’re seasoned hikers or prefer shorter trails, there’s something for everyone. Read more on my Ultimate White Mountains Elopement Guide here.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia’s dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and sweeping ocean views make it a dream destination. Trails like Beehive or Jordan Pond offer epic backdrops, and the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain is pure magic. Read more on my Ultimate Acadia National Park Elopement Guide here.

Pro Tip: Work with someone who knows the area (like me!) to discover hidden gems and avoid the crowds. – Lets chat!

2. Plan for the Season

Each season offers unique challenges and opportunities for a hiking elopement. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Spring:

• Pros: Blooming wildflowers, fewer crowds, bright greens, warmer weather.

• Cons: Muddy trails, unpredictable weather.

• Tip: Wear waterproof hiking boots and pack layers. – Here are the boots I hike in.

Summer:

• Pros: Long daylight hours, vibrant landscapes.

• Cons: Crowds on popular trails, heat.

• Tip: Start your hike early to beat the crowds and the heat by planning a sunrise hike.

Fall:

• Pros: Stunning foliage, crisp air, not too hot or cold.

• Cons: Shorter daylight hours, colder evenings, can be crowded.

• Tip: Plan for a sunset hike to get the golden hour glow over the breathtaking foliage. And only plan for weekdays to avoid crowds.

Winter:

• Pros: Peaceful, snow-covered trails.

• Cons: Harsh weather, icy conditions, can be COLD.

• Tip: Bring microspikes, warm layers, blankets at props, and hot drinks to stay cozy.

3. Pick the Right Trail

Your hiking elopement should match your comfort level and abilities. Consider:

Trail Length & Difficulty: Choose a trail that feels doable and enjoyable. I do all the location scouting for my couples. I will give you as specific description or each hiking option, the difficulty level, and length. If you are not working with an expert where you're eloping, use AllTrails to do research on different hikes, current conditions, and difficulty level.

Accessibility: Some trails may be challenging with gear, so plan accordingly. I always recommend hiking up in regular hiking attire and changing at the summit for most hikes. This helps you stay safe and comfortable while hiking.

Pro tip: If you're a sweater like me, pack an extra shirt to hike back down in so you don't have to put your sweaty one back on.

Scenic Features: Look for trails with stunning viewpoints, waterfalls, or unique landscapes. Again use AllTrails for this. – I seriously love this app so much! The paid version you can preview your hike to get a better idea of what it's like.

4. Pack Smart for Your Elopement

You’ll need to pack more than your average hike:

Essentials: Water, snacks, first-aid kit, layers, flashlight/headlamps and navigation tools. Pack just like you would for any other hike. Just add in the extras!

Elopement Gear: Vows, rings, and a lightweight blanket for sitting or curling up in. It's always fun to make your day a little more you by bringing a celebratory drink or treat for the top.

Outfit Changes: Pack your wedding attire in a garment bag or towel to change into at the top. If you're my couple ask me how I recommend you pack your attire to keep it wrinkle free and safe.

Pro Tip: Keep your backpack light but don’t skimp on essentials—comfort is key! A hack for this is to use a backpacking pack for this. It's an easy way to have plenty of room for everything. And if it doesn't fit in your pack, I'll toss it in mine!

5. Include Meaningful Touches

Make your hiking elopement truly unique by adding personal details:

Exchange Handwritten Vows: Read them in a secluded spot with a view.

Share a Favorite Snack: Celebrate with PB&Js or a cake cutting at the top.

Bring a Special Drink: Toast with a thermos of coffee, tea, champagne, or beer.

Capture the Moment: Plan for epic photos to relive the day forever. I can't stress enough how your elopement day isn't a photo shoot, its memories to look back on forever. The photos are generally the only thing your have left after your day to help you bring those moments back to life.

Tips for a Stress-Free Hiking Elopement

Hire Experienced Vendors: Work with photographers and planners who understand hiking logistics. (Hey, hey, let's chat about your dream day in the mountains!)

Check Permits: Some parks, like Acadia, require permits for elopements or group activities.

Start Early: Begin your hike before sunrise for the best light and fewer people.

Practice Leave No Trace: Respect the environment by packing out everything you bring.
