An Adventurous, Seaside Ceremony in One of Maine’s Most Iconic Locations
If you’ve been dreaming of saying your vows with your toes in the sand, the sound of waves crashing behind you, and the golden glow of morning light filtering through the trees—let me introduce you to one of the most magical spots on the East Coast: Sand Beach in Acadia National Park.
As an Acadia elopement photographer, I’ve spent countless mornings wandering this coastline and trust me—it never gets old. Sand Beach is truly a gem. With its tucked-away cove, rugged cliffs, and that dramatic combo of mountain-meets-ocean, it’s a picture-perfect spot for couples who want something equal parts breathtaking and meaningful.

Why Choose Sand Beach for Your Elopement?
First off—let’s talk vibes. Sand Beach feels both wild and intimate. It’s not your typical open ocean beach. It’s surrounded by towering pines, rocky cliffs, and the sound of the Atlantic echoing off the cove. When the sun rises over the horizon and bathes the beach in golden light? Pure magic.
Here’s why couples love it:
Easy to access (especially early in the morning!)
Gorgeous sunrise light with east-facing views
Close to iconic spots like Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, and Gorham Mountain
A great mix of sand + rock = variety in your elopement photos

Timing Your Sand Beach Elopement
If you’re set on eloping at Sand Beach, timing is everything. It’s one of Acadia’s most popular spots, so I always recommend:
Sunrise ceremonies in Acadia – You’ll beat the crowds and get the dreamiest light. Seriously, it’s worth the early wake-up.
Weekdays – Less foot traffic and more privacy.
Spring or fall – Cooler temps, fewer visitors, and those fall colors? Unreal.
Avoid Summer – I strongly recommend avoiding a summer ceremony at Sand beach as that is the busiest time of year there.
Because it’s along the Park Loop Road (which runs one-way), planning ahead is key—especially if you’re hoping to visit more than one location on your elopement day. I always help my couples map out their timeline to avoid any road-related headaches.

Permits + Logistics
To legally elope in Acadia National Park, you’ll need a Special Use Permit if your ceremony includes more than 10 people. But even for smaller elopements, it’s a good idea to double-check with the park. A permit helps ensure we can have your ceremony at the time and location you want without interruption.
Some things to keep in mind for Sand Beach:
Ceremonies are allowed outside peak hours (sunrise is great!)
No setups (like arches or chairs), but we can get creative with natural details
The tide can affect where we stand on the beach, so flexibility is key
And don’t worry—I guide my couples through all of this. I’ve helped with everything from permit questions to tide charts.

Making Your Beach Elopement Unique
The best part about a Sand Beach elopement? You can truly make it your own. Here are just a few ideas my couples have loved:
Start your morning with a quiet sunrise ceremony, then go explore. We can hit Jordan Pond for a celebratory picnic or take a short hike for mountain views.
Add an adventure twist—think boat tour, canoe ride, seaplane flight, or biking the carriage roads.
Bring your dog (just not to sand beach in the summer) and let them be part of the magic.
Plan a private dinner at a cozy Bar Harbor restaurant or hire a private chef for a post-elopement feast.
And if you’re wondering how to keep things relaxed and fun (not stiff and posed)—don’t worry, I’ve got you. I’ll gently guide you through your day so you can focus on each other while I capture the real, beautiful, joy-filled moments.

Where to Stay Nearby
Want to stay close to Sand Beach? Here are a few cozy, elopement-friendly spots nearby:
Bar Harbor Inns + B&Bs – Quaint and close to everything
Glamping options if you want something rustic-chic
Airbnbs with ocean views for a peaceful place to unwind after your day
Many couples make a whole weekend out of it—kayaking, hiking, grabbing lobster rolls, and soaking in that salty Maine air.

Canoe Elopement on Eagle Lake
One of my favorite Sand Beach elopement days started out on the moody, windy waters of Eagle Lake, where the couple spent a peaceful morning canoeing together—just the two of them, gliding past the shoreline with the mountains rising all around. It was quiet, calm, and full of that kind of sweet, grounding energy that sets the tone for a really meaningful day.
After drying off and soaking up the sun, we made our way over to Sand Beach, where they shared their private vow exchange along the rocky coastline. The tide was low, the light was golden, and the sound of the waves made the perfect background soundtrack. No audience, no pressure—just pure, honest emotion and views that’ll take your breath away.
To top it all off, they celebrated with a luxury picnic right on the beach—think cozy blankets, champagne, delicious local treats, and lots of laughter. We stayed until the sky turned that soft pastel blue, and the whole day just felt like them—adventurous, intentional, and wildly beautiful.
They rented their canoe from: National Park Canoe + Kayak Rentals.
